If he does not have such a book it does not mean you should immediately get up and leave but I would believe that this does cause some concerns and you should seek further references.  

A good surgeon is one that is open to questioning and willing to provide answers. He should be the one putting you art ease and actually be able to discern your questions before you ask them.  He needs to be reassuring and comforting.  Anyone that isn’t is hinting that they do not really care and would you want to put your body in their hands?
